Castañer is the name of a family whose hard work, commitment and vision have forged a large international footwear brand. Through their years of experience, respect for tradition and innovative spirit, at Castañer have turned popular espadrilles into sophisticated footwear, which can now be found alongside top brands in show windows all over the world.
Castañer’s origin can be traced back to 1776, year in which Rafael Castañer, the family’s first espadrille maker, was born. In 1927, the brand’s first workshop was founded. In the mid-1960s, the company underwent a generational shift, with Lorenzo Castañer, lawyer, and his wife Isabel. They refocused the business from a traditional espadrille to a fashionable form of footwear.
In the early 70s, Lorenzo and Isabel met Yves Saint Laurent while attending a trade fair in Paris. He was looking for a supplier to make him a wedge espadrille. Since this first collaboration, Castañer has been attracting top fashion houses and making them espadrilles ever since. Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Tom Ford, Loro Piana, Fendi, Oscar de la Renta, Cloë, Roger Vivier, and Lanvin are just some of the prestigious international brands that work with Castañer.
Isabel with four of her children, who represent the brand’s seventh generation, manage the company. Castañer opened its first own shop in Barcelona in 1994. This was soon followed by shops in cities such as Madrid, Paris, Saint Tropez or Tokyo.
Castañer is currently present in more than 56 countries worldwide. Exports presently account for more than 90% of the firm’s turnover, with Italy as the primary market, followed by Japan and France. As part of their expansion and internationalization strategy, they have positioned Castañer at more than 1,300 points of sale in prestigious stores throughout the world.
